He wanted us to undestand how shotr are dominated by the use of scientific knowledge to classify and normalise people and people’s behaviors and how we build social structures to minimize this domination. The sheer intricacy of his mind, and the effort it took to read this book – remarkable in its intelligence and clarity — simply bowled me over.

Foucault: A Very Short Introduction – Very Short Introductions
Gutting did an excellent job giving me a better overview of Foucault than I had previously as well as a very foucaault look into his works. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
All-in-all a rather good book–even for the reader who’s read a few of Foucault’s books.

Though often cited as a post-structuralist and postmodernist, Foucault rejected Foucault: Most Helpful Most Recent. If you can make sense of them, then it might well be time to jump right in. I enjoyed the narrator’s voice and felt that the introduction was a good point from which to embark on further reading.
This introduction sounds authoritative, and shows that Foucault was interested in transgressions in general, and the notions of power and knowledge; identity, s Foucault was never a succint writer, which will get on my nerves every time I attempt to introfuction something by him, because his work was so important in the history of philosophy and I really want to understand more his ideas.

A good way to know what else to read from his work. What choices do these questions obligate me to make? Gutting has given here a clear, concise and sympathetic outlining of Foucault’s main ideas, placing them in historical context and not getting bogged down in huge tracts of detailed thinking where a light touch heightens the effect propitiously.
